Making pizza at home can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Here’s a basic recipe for making homemade pizza:

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 2 ½ to 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt

For the Sauce:

  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Toppings:

  • Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Your choice of toppings (e.g., pepperoni, sliced bell peppers, mushrooms, olives)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Dough:

  • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 ½ cups of flour, olive oil, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, adding more flour as needed, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.

2. Make the Sauce:

  • In a saucepan, combine crushed tomatoes, minced garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
  • Simmer the sauce over low heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust seasoning to taste.

3. Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to the highest temperature it can go (usually around 475°F/245°C).

4. Roll Out the Dough:

  • Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface to your desired thickness.

5. Assemble the Pizza:

  • Place the rolled-out dough on a pizza stone or a baking sheet.
  • Spread the tomato sauce over the dough, leaving a border for the crust.
  • Add a layer of shredded mozzarella cheese and your chosen toppings.

6. Bake the Pizza:

  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

7. Enjoy:

  • Remove the pizza from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, then slice and enjoy your homemade pizza!
