Thean Chun Coffee Shop 天津茶室

It very popular restaurant, good local food taste that worth to come by. It has variety include chicken kuey teow soup noodles, satay, chee cheong fun, and signature egg caramel custard (which is apparently so smooth it’ll melt in your mouth instantly). Bring your family and friends, so you can order a bit of everything to share joy!

Kedai Kopi Yong Suan (halal)

Nasi Ganja is same as Nasi Kandar, a term called by the locals as it’s so irresistible. Start your day with the best nasi ganja in town at Kedai Kopi Yong Suan, a rustic coffee shop that has been in business for over 60 years. Although is packed most time, they do serve quick and efficient so don’t worry if you spot a long queue (in fact, even locals are in queue there to buy nasi). Pair your nasi ganja with ayam merah, salted egg, veggies, and topped with flavourful curries like how local eats, you will not regret.

Nam Heong White Coffee 南香茶餐室

Egg tarts, baked siew bao and Ipoh white coffee at the rustic Nam Heong White Coffee Shop, perfect breakfast combo not to missed! This, one of the pioneers of Ipoh white coffee and is the inspiration behind the now-popular Old Town White Coffee. The coffee here is foamy and has a great balance of sweetness and bitterness – goes well egg tarts or kaya and butter toast for some simple goodness.

Lou Wong Bean Sprout Chicken

How to not notice fragrant chicken rice in Ipoh especially Lou Wong Bean Sprout Chicken. This is one of the famous chicken rice places in Ipoh! If you’re bean sprouts fan, make sure to order a big plate of taugebean sprout (where local called them ‘tau-geh’) to pair with your chicken rice. Choose for hor fun (flat white noodles) if you prefer that over rice. Other popular bean sprout chicken spots in Ipoh include Yoon Kee Bean Sprouts Chicken, Cowan Street Ayam Tauge & Koitiau, and Restoran Onn Kee Tauge Ayam.

Tau fu fah (soya beancurd), a perfect dessert when in Ipoh! It is informed that tau fu fah here is made with local spring water, giving it its unique taste and texture. Our favourite spot to satisfy our tau fu fah cravings is Funny Mountain, a family-run store that has been serving good tau fu fah for over 60 years. “Drive-thru”, special service that provided by this store, enjoy it in your car with air-conditioning.

 Ipoh Tuck Kee Restaurant 德记炒粉专门店

Restoran Tuck Kee is a half-a-century old restaurant that is almost always packed with hungry patrons, even locals. Their signature dish here Yut Kong Hor (known as Moonlight Hor Fun) which is probably best in state and a must not missed. Try out other bestsellers such as Wak Dan Hor (Egg Braised White Noodle), braised chicken feet, baby octopus in soy sauce, and more to complete your wholesome meal.

New Hollywood Canning Garden (halal)

Here you can get halal yet authentic Chinese food in Ipoh. New Hollywood Canning Garden has been in operation for over 30 years and is famous knowns for its Hong Kong chee cheong fun made fresh with prawns or chicken. Other best sellers here include wonton noodles, chakoi, and curry noodle. Come in early to avoid crowd builds up, or be ready to wait in line for a seat.

Restaurant Sun Kim Aik 新锦益点心茶楼

Ipoh, a place known well with ‘Dim Sum City’. There are many dim sum shop in town, most popular ones like Ming Court Hong Kong Dim Sum, Foh San, and Restoran Chooi Yue. If you like to dine at a restaurant like locals, check out Sun Kim Aik, a neighbourhood dim sum spot where you can get freshly make dim sum favourites with more reasonable price (prices are friendly and portions are generous here). Signature items such as siew mai, char siew bao, dai bao, lo mai gai, egg tarts, and har kau. A tea pot of chinese tea to pair, eat like locals on every morning.

Tip : Make sure you come early, as restaurant is only open until 12pm or as soon as food is sold out.

Aun Kheng Lim Salted Chicken 宴琼林盐焗鸡

‘Yim Kuk Kai’ in the local language, salted chicken is a popular gift to be brought back from your Ipoh trip. Marinated in rice wine and a variety of Chinese herbs, there many shops you can get delicious salt-baked chicken, there even offer a freeze-dried version for gifting convenience! One of my favourite salted chicken shops in Ipoh is Aun Kheng Lim Salted Chicken, where you can get their special recipe of tasty chicken nicely packaged in bright red boxes as perfect hand-letter to end your trip !

Kedai Biskut Sin Eng Heong 新荣香

Don’t leave Ipoh without getting some kaya puffs and must-eat salty sweet peanut candy from this famous shop! Sin Eng Heong is one of the oldest biscuit shops in Ipoh that has been around for 60 years already. Their legendary kaya puffs (known as Kaya Kok, secret recipe of mixture special hand-made sugar, coconut milk and or pandan leave) are sweet, flaky, and baked fresh daily with traditional baking methods. Besides that, don’t forget to get them on your shopping cart like snacks and pastries such as sesame balls, famous peanut candy, siew bao, and biscuits filled with pandan paste, bean paste, red beans, and meat floss.
